You
can see the fantastic Philharmonia Orchestra on Saturday
4 October
2008 at Plymouth Pavilions The
Philharmonia and Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra both return
to Plymouth Pavilions, whilst the Ten Tors Orchestra perform
Valentine?
s Day and St Cecilia? s Day Concerts at the Guildhall and
St Andrews Church. This series comes to an exciting crescendo
this March with a visit from the European Union Chamber
Orchestra and world renowned soloist Julian Lloyd Webber.
Returning
to Plymouth for their third consecutive year, the Philharmonia
Orchestra open the evening with Beethoven’s powerful and
expressive Egmont Overture before piano virtuoso Boris Berezovsky
performs Brahms First Piano Concerto. Although the concerto
is a work of the composer? s youth, written when Brahms
was just
25, the work is most striking in its grandeur and scale, as
well as the
thrilling technical difficulties that it presents to the
soloist.

Ten Tors Orchestra commence the St Cecilia’s Day
concert with
one of Albinonis most famous compositions, commonly
transcribed
today for major film scores with a reputation as one of
the
most frequently recorded pieces of baroque music, Adagio
for Organ
and Strings. With the additions of French composer Ravel
who
takes you on a tragic journey of the Spanish Princess
and Elgar’s
Sospiri, written just before World War One reflecting
the build-up
to the horrific war. This spectacular concert comes to a
climax
with Hadyn’s Symphony No.94 Surprise, named after the
loud
chord opening of the second movement. |
The
Ten Tors Orchestra was launched at an inaugural concert in
Tavistock
in the heart of rural Devon in December 1998. It is now
established
as the premier professional chamber orchestra in Devon
& Cornwall performing a year round series of concerts in
the region.
